I use this quite often. Your first example is close:
---- a.ml ----
open Batteries
module Ord = struct type t=string let compare=compare end
module type S = sig
include module type of Map.Make(Ord)
(* You do not need the Map.Make(Ord) prefix *)
include module type of Labels
end
----
That works for me on OCaml 3.12.1 with Batteries 1.4.1.
