The answer is I must have been smoking crack the first time I timed things, because this desktop machine has msvc6 @ 15sec, ocamlopt @ 25sec, ocamlopt.opt @ 10sec. It is a wider gap msvc6 vs. ocamlopt (~3x), but I still obviously made a mistake or was sloppy, and still .opt makes a big difference on my code.
