For the record, I ran into this problem myself.  The easiest solution  
to my particular problem was to switch to using Lisp, although I am  
not advocating that you do the same.  (I'm not interested in any kind  
of language evangelizing flamewar.)  I couldn't think of an appealing  
way to deal with the problem.
