I did this manually for powerpc and arm targets a while ago, but I
agree that it would be nice to automate it and have it merged into the
main build system.
You might want to look at the ScratchBox approach
(http://www.scratchbox.org/) which uses an emulator like qemu to run
test programs on the target.
