DESTDIR affects *only* where you install files. --prefix and such often
affect paths compiled into the binaries. Overriding makefile variables
often work, but sometimes it does not (for example when configuration
files containing paths are created upon make install). This is why
DESTDIR support is encouraged.
It's needed to build debs and rpms, and is hard to write, so by putting
it in your package you enlarge chances to get new users, when someone
packages it :-)
